Tyree Gaines Service Broadcast

Tyree Kathryn Horn Gaines, 93, of Lawrenceburg formerly of Harrodsburg and Boston, Massachusetts died peacefully on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at Taylor Manor Nursing Home in Versailles, KY.

Tyree was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, James Keith Gaines, as well as her mother and father Elizabeth Oakley and Andrew B. Horn, a brother Benton Horn, a niece Debra Brady, two sisters-in-law Emma Cammack (Benton) and Nancy Gaines Goff.

A longtime member of Sand Spring Baptist Church, she was a 1947 graduate of Kavanaugh High School.  Tyree was employed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky.  She worked for the Chief of Staff for Governors Combs and Breathitt.  She had always held non-merit positions for several elected officials, Thelma Stoval, KY Secretary of State, Treasurer, and Lt. Governor, others Drex Davis, Frances Jones Mills, and Bremer Erler.  Tyree was sworn in by Chief Justice of the Courts as acting Secretary of State.

After retiring from State Government, Tyree went to work at the Lawrenceburg Flower Shop.  An avid Democrat, she had been involved in many campaigns and belonged to the State Democrat Woman's Club.

Tyree is survived by two sons, Dr. Larry Gaines (Jean Franklin) of California and Gary Gaines (Mary Jane York) of Lawrenceburg; four grandchildren, Ashly Gaines (Richard Galope), Courtney Gaines, Cody Gaines (Nancy Gartner), and Johnny Shouse (Wendy); ten great grandchildren; and a sister Elizabeth Jane "Libby" Horn (Rillen Thomas). Libby had been Tyree's caregiver.  Tyree also leaves two nieces Jackie Brown (Tony) and Teri Drury (Bill) and a nephew Greg Goff (TJ McDonnald); and the Hartley's (Miles, Stacy, Austin, and Matt).

Tyree was a humanitarian and was often working at the soup kitchen in Frankfort.  Tyree had a personality which gave her many friends and was always eager to help people in many ways.  Her children and grandchildren were so important to her.  She loved animals and had many of them.  Her loves were UK basketball, politics and her Lord.  She will be missed at the nursing home and by many.

Visitation will be held from 11 – 1 Friday, July 29, 2022 followed by the funeral service beginning at 1:00 PM Friday at the Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home.  Dr. Mike Hamrick will officiate the service.  Burial will follow in the Lawrenceburg Cemetery.
