Funeral Service Broadcast for Thomas Jones

Retired Lawrenceburg attorney and former state Rep. Thomas Martin Jones, 77, died suddenly on Tuesday morning, Jan. 14, following a heart attack at his home.

Tom was a beloved and devoted husband to Ann, his wife and best friend of 55 years; a hero to his sons, Tom and Steve; and the grandest of grandfathers to Jake, Drew, Grace and Annabelle.

Tom served as an attorney in Lawrenceburg for nearly five decades, providing support and counsel to countless clients and their loved ones during difficult, stressful times. He took pride in being a small-town lawyer who helped members of his community. He also enjoyed supporting and offering advice to young attorneys as they established their careers, and he briefly served as attorney for the City of Lawrenceburg in the 1980s. He was proud to serve for decades as attorney for the North Mercer Water District.

Tom was a member of the Kentucky General Assembly from 1981-90, spending his 30s and early 40s representing the state's 55th House District, which was made up of Anderson, Mercer and Spencer counties.

As a legislator, Tom championed funding for public education and teacher salaries, and he was a strong proponent of the Kentucky Education Reform Act of 1990. In addition, his efforts contributed to the creation of the Lawrenceburg campus of Bluegrass Community and Technical College.

Tom also was proud of his role in supporting Kentucky Educational Television (KET) and Kentucky State Parks, among dozens of other programs and agencies.

Tom was strongly devoted to his family. There is nothing he wouldn't do or give to help a relative. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, attending their games, competitions and performances.

Tom is perhaps best defined by his marriage to Ann. They spent nearly every moment of every day together, including as coworkers after Ann retired from teaching and began working in his law office.  They shared everything and depended on each other for everything, and their children can't recall their parents ever having a single fight. In 2005, Tom and Ann built their dream house on Graefenburg Road, where they loved hosting and entertaining family and friends.

Tom also spent endless hours mowing and bushhogging the 12-acre property, which brought him great satisfaction and relaxation.

He loved cheering for the Kentucky Wildcats; reading and watching the news (especially political news); traveling (having visited nearly all 50 states); and watching old Westerns and war movies.

Tom is survived by his wife, Ann Frances Sharp Jones; children Thomas Bradford Jones (Christy) of Hendersonville, Tennessee, and Stephen Wesley Jones (Niki), of Louisville; grandchildren Jake Thomas Jones, Andrew Lee Jones, Grace Mae Jones, and Annabelle Lee Jones; sisters Mary Edwards, Esther Webb and Betty Short; brothers-in-law Sid Webb, Roy Short and Lincoln Sharp; sisters-in-law Nancy Goldston and Rebecca Sharp; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by brothers-in-law Gilbert Edwards and David Goldston.

Born June 22,1947 in Salvisa, Tom was the son of Ezra Theodore Jones and Eunice Martin Jones, both deceased.

Tom proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to '71. He earned a bachelor's degree and law degree from the University of Kentucky, and he was also a graduate of Mercer County High School. He was a member and former deacon at Lawrenceburg First Christian Church.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, and a funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at Ritchie and Peach Funeral Home, with an additional hour of visitation Saturday before the service.
