Susan Herrington Thurman, 68, wife of Chuck Thurman, passed into the arms of Jesus on Friday, May 2, 2025.

Born September 20, 1956, in upstate New York in the small rural town of Mechanicville, Sue was blessed with a childhood filled with family and fond memories.

She was the second of six daughters born to Fred H. Herrington, Jr. and Nancy Herrington. Her sisters are Wendy Brookshire (Michael) of Stephenson, AL, Linda Conant (Ron) of W. Grove, PA, Barbara Todd (Chuck) of Downingtown, PA, and Julie Wyshinski (John) of Pennsville, NJ. She was preceded in death by a sister, Valeria Featherly.

She is also survived by her mother, Nancy Herrington, of Pennsville, NJ; her son, Phillip Thurman (Allie) of Bagdad, KY, and their children, Mollie, Ava, and Preston; her daughter, Laura Heil (Jacob) of Waddy, KY, and their children, Jeremiah, Jonathan, Jacob, and Josiah.

Sue lived her teenage years in far west Kentucky. She was a 1974 graduate of Ballard Memorial High School. After high school, she enrolled at Murray State University with her best friend, Karen Terry (now Spires). Her college years saw her develop one of her passions, which was elementary education.

Sue became Mrs. Chuck Thurman in 1979. She was hired that year by the Shelby County Board of Education to teach at Bagdad Elementary, then later became the 4th-grade teacher at Northside Elementary School. As the years moved forward, first a son was born, then a daughter. Now another passion developed— her own children! All along this path, she completed her Master's degree in education at Georgetown College. Sue spent some time in Anderson County Public Schools, then, later, was able to be involved in Christian education for preschoolers in what would later become The Christian Academy of Lawrenceburg.

She was very good at helping to mold young minds in a Christ-centered educational setting. This would seem to be the mountain top for her passions, but then came grandchildren!! The role of Grandmother (Nana) would define her. She surely cherished each moment with any of the 7. As with the students she taught, her grandchildren will take Sue's heartfelt lessons and stories with them as they walk through life forever.

Sue was fortunate enough to spend the last few weeks of her life at the family home in Lawrenceburg. She was in the presence of those who loved her; that is a long list. Thanks to all that aided in her comfort. The calls, texts, flowers, and food— All were very meaningful.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 24 from 8:00 AM until 1:00 PM at the Lawrenceburg United Methodist Church located at 565 Carlton Drive, Lawrenceburg, KY 40342. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 24 at 2:30 PM with Pastor Rodney Stewart-Wilcox officiating. The family suggests casual attire.
