James David "Buddy" Ryan, 85, of Shelbyville formerly of Lawrenceburg, predeceased by his wife Joanie, passed away June 28, 2016 in Louisville, KY.

Buddy, who proudly served his country as a M/Sgt in the US Army during the Korean War, coached with NFL teams including the Philadelphia Eagles, the Chicago Bears during the 1985 Super Bowl XX winning season, the New York Jets during Super Bowl III winning season, Minnesota Vikings, Houston Oilers, and retired after two seasons as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.

Survivors include his sons, Jim Ryan of IL, Rex Ryan and his wife Michelle and Rob Ryan and his wife Kristen, all of Buffalo, NY, and six grandchildren, James David Ryan, III, Peyton Ryan, Seth Ryan, Joseph Ryan, Matthew Ryan, and Dimitra Ryan. Buddy was also predeceased by his parents and five brothers.

Funeral Mass was held July 1st at St. Lawrence Catholic Church with Rev. Chris Clay and Rev. Mike Tobin officiating. Chicago Bear middle linebacker and NFL Hall of Famer, Mike Singletary gave the eulogy and Pat McCaskey of the Chicago Bears shared some memories. The family received visitors prior to service at the Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home. Burial followed services in the Lawrenceburg Cemetery with military honors.

Serving as pallbearers were some of Buddy's former players, Dan Hampton, Gary Fencik, Doug Plank, Dan Neal, Aneas Williams, Seth Joyner, Eric Allen, Richard Dent, and Clyde Simmons.
