Elwood Davis McCann, Sr., 86, of Versailles, husband of 34 years of Suzanne Cole McCann, passed away Monday, November 23, 2015 at his residence. Born July 31, 1929 in Nicholas County, KY, he was the son of the late Charles McCann, Sr. and Vivian Lawrence Campbell and predeceased by his first wife Dorothy Marie Osborne McCann.

Mr. McCann served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army and was a retired trainer of thoroughbred race horses, training for over 50 years. He trained horses for many years for J.P. Mills of Hickory Tree Farm, for his lifelong friends Cot and Anne Campbell of Dogwood Stable, Jonabel Farm, and for his good friend James W. Orr, Sr. Some of his notable stakes winners were Going Straight who ran in the Kentucky Derby, Power Boat, Patch of Sun, Eirlino, Good Night Run, and Kick the Can, who was named after Mr. McCann.

Along with his wife, Mr. McCann is survived by six children, Elwood Davis "Dave" McCann, Jr. (Anita) and Danny Ray McCann (Linda), both of Lawrenceburg, Wanda Marie McCann Drake (Paul) of Georgia, Jerry Wayne McCann (Carol) of Versailles, Daryl Layne McCann (Jeneva) of Texas, and Andrew Philip McCann of Versailles; 10 grandchildren, Teresa Lynn Cochran, Amanda Marie Nichols, Anthony Michael "Toney" McCann, Elwood Davis "Davey" McCann III, Robert Joseph "Robby" McCann, Dorothy Louise "Dotty" Watts, Susan Cochran, Priscilla Skinker Eckert, Adrianne Lucinda McCann, Jeremy Wayne McCann; 16 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; a sister, Louise McCann Barker of Nicholasville; and a brother Charles Franklin McCann, Jr.; and his faithful dog companion, Booker.

Including his parents, Mr. McCann was predeceased by a still born daughter, Wynona Marie McCann; and two brothers, John Harris McCann and Eddie T. McCann.

Memorial services will be 12 (noon) Friday, Nov. 27th at the Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home with Keeneland Chaplain Bobby Aldridge officiating. Visitation will be 10 AM – 12 (noon) Friday. Mr. McCann's cremains will be interred at the Camp Nelson National Cemetery at a later date.
